The Best Chilled Red Wines For Summer
While rosé wine is synonymous with summer, be sure not to overlook a fine and fruity, lightly chilled red. Wine expert, Sam Caporn of Aldi says they’re perfect for summer sipping – pair with a cheese and charcuterie board, or barbecued meats.
A member of the exclusive Institute of Masters of Wine, Sam Caporn says, “Traditional serving rules advise that white wine is best served chilled, whereas red wine is usually drunk at room temperature. However, in warm weather, all styles of red come alive when chilled – even riper, richer wines. Chilling the wine helps to bring the alcohol and acidity back into balance, providing refreshment that is much needed, and appreciated, in the sunshine.
“The likes of Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc can be enjoyed over the summer months – something our European neighbours have embraced for a long time. Simply treat the red wine as you would a white or rosé and leave it in the fridge or pop in an ice bucket to chill. If you leave it in the fridge overnight, I’d recommend taking it out 20 minutes before serving for optimum temperature.”
Here are the top 5 to try at home.
Specially Selected Le Bourgeron Pinot Noir
Alfresco charcuterie and cheese feasts are quintessentially summer, so opt for a French Pinot Noir such as Aldi’s Specially Selected Le Bourgeron. Sam says, “This elegant French is ideal with classic picnic fare such as charcuterie, cold meats, cheeses, and pâté served with crusty bread. These dishes complement the wine’s distinct aromas of summer berries, such as cranberry, cherry, raspberry and redcurrant – delicious!”
Specially Selected Ventoux Rouge
Many Mediterranean dishes are hugely popular in the summer -- think Spanish paella, Turkish lamb kebabs and Greek-influenced roasted aubergines. Pair with the fresh and flavourful Specially Selected Ventoux Rouge to create a fiesta for the palate. According to Sam, “This Grenache-based blend offers juicy berry flavours that pair terrifically with an array of dishes for a true taste of the Mediterranean.”
Specially Selected Bourgogne Gamay
Light, summery salads are always a great go-to when hosting laid-back lunches in the sun. Pair leafy dishes with Aldi’s award-winning Bourgogne Gamay, Sam says, “Filled with light red fruits and delicate flavours of cherry blossom, violet and tart raspberry, this Gamay is wonderful with warm green salads. It’s also an excellent choice for savoury pastry dishes such as brie, bacon and cranberry tart!”
Estevez Chilean Merlot
Grilled meats such as burgers, sausages, and steaks, are staples served at any barbecue gathering – and Aldi’s Estevez Chilean Merlot offers the ideal vino match. Sam says: “This bottle of red boasts aromas of blueberry and plum, with a smooth, juicy palate that makes it a great match for succulent, barbecued meats.”
Chilean Pinot Noir
For fish and white meat lovers, Sam suggests a fruity and juicy red such as the Specially Selected Chilean Pinot Noir, “Light in colour with berry fruits on the nose and palate, this red offers fruity flavours of cherry, raspberry and ripe blueberry that makes a beautiful accompaniment to meaty fish such as tuna or grilled chicken.”
